Another Onion

With hindsight, the task of creating a news page with Django was really trivial — in terms of the Django part. I have the Django bit all working and, even including the installing and reading of tutorial, it could have been done in a few hours. The problem is that doing it brings up all the questions about site design and other web tools that I had previously avoided.

I’m not complaining, I think it’s necessary for me to lay the groundwork of an overall site now, it’s just that I’ve spent a ton of time allowing myself to drift off to read CSS tutorials, or web design forums and I wanted to make it clear where the time was spent and not give the wrong impression about the ease of developing with Django. Apart from the teething problems I’ve already mentioned, Django pretty much removed all the effort in the simple task I had set myself and it has successfully clarified the structural issues I need to look at in creating the site, which was exactly why I was looking for a framework in the first place.

I don’t expect to be able to put a lot of time into the game project for a while, perhaps a few hours on two or three days a week. I think I’ll continue looking at the web-design aspects for a while as that’s easier to pick up and put down than some of the game-server tasks that are lined up.
